UNIVERSAL DESIGN
My goal is to create a classroom where every student is challenged to solve problems. Through structuring student discourse, ideas are shared and common understandings are established - based on student thinking. It is in this way that students' needs are addressed 'universally'. Changes to plans are constantly made based upon student understanding relative to expectations and instructional goals.
Why is this important? It is important because it sets an expectation that all students are capable of powerful thinking. It sets an expectation that the students hold the authority over what makes sense. The structure is in place to build mathematicians.
